The design evolved to answer the developing need in broadcast journalism for immediacy based on extensive use of computers. Long production times can no longer be accommodated. People follow stories throughout the day, getting information from a variety of sources, as events around the world unfold. Simply stated, news media organizations need to focus on stories, not production.

Newsplex is a working newsroom that provides a state of-the-art laboratory for training media journalists. It is a place where new techniques and technologies are tested; where students and working journalists from news organizations come to train. Project manager Maria Sevely coordinated the design within a simple existing campus structure.
