Ocean Edge
Location: Brewster, MA, USA
The architecture of the estate utilizes local fieldstone, wood shingle, and clapboard in the manner typical of grand late nineteenth century New England summer “cottages,” blending details from a variety of historical sources with sustainable development.
The resort extends upland from its own beach through the heart of the Cape Cod Historic District. The National Landmark Mansion, Guest House and Tower structures were renovated to form a new Conference Center and Hotel, in addition to the construction of a new Clubhouse and 935 clustered condominium units and full range of resort amenities. Maria Sevely was senior project designer charged with leading the realization of the Resort. The innovative clubhouse, winner of an AIA New England Design of the Year award, was the model for a long-running Harvard GSD design course.
The restoration encompassed the exterior and interior, as well as site elements. On the exterior, materials were repaired or replicated to retain the original character.
